This charming dress has really lived and been loved.
Made in the 1940s, this floppy cotton dress in warm brown with a charming stylised bow print is a genuine piece of Make Do and Mend history. Someone cut off the bottom to make a belt and then, because the skirt was too short, added a linen insert - the insert is done entirely by hand.
The styling of the dress is classic early 1940s - puffed sleeves, waist insert and gathered bodice.
Best suited to a 44-38-46 and the bodice is meant to be blouson, it isn't meant to be a close fitting piece. To ensure it will fit you, please compare the measurements below to a similar item you already own;
Flat bust 24"
Flat waist 20.5"
Flat hip 24"
Shoulders between sleeves 17.5"
Shoulder to waist 17.5"
Shoulder to hem 50"
Underarm sleeve length 5.5"
Flat cuff 6.5"
Good with points to note;
- there is a 1.5" by 0.5" patch on the top of the left shoulder - see photo
- there is some minor underarm discolouration/colour bleed. The dress has been washed and the discolouration didn't come out.
- the centre neck opening has had a small repair, only noticed from the inside
- there are 4 pinholes on the left waist area
It is an absolutely beautiful dress and has plenty of life left in it.
