This piece was made in the 1940's and was most likely a make do and mend piece.
A black leather bag which has been covered with broad strips of grosgrain woven together in basket weave, it has two smart handles and a decorative bow trim on each side. It fastens with a single popper.
It looks like this is a make do and mend piece because the main body of the bag is made from a black leather bag that had clearly seen better days. To give it a new lease of life it has been altered and covered with grosgrain.
Measurements
Length 9.5"
Height, excluding handles, 9"
Height with handles 12"
Condition
The leather which is underneath the grosgrain is strong but very worn and has lost a lot of the black colour - possibly one of the reasons the bag was given a makeover. There is a small split on the inner between the grosgrain and the leather. The inner is a bit scruffy with the inner pocket loose.
