This fabulous scarf is made from artificial silk and it is entirely covered with signatures which have been carefully embroidered in chain stitch.
I've seen the design for this featured in a wartime Needlework Illustrated Magazine and the idea was you got your friends to sign a piece of fabric and then you embroidered it to get yourself a unique piece of wearable art - see the final photo in the listing.
This piece is covered with over 100 different signatures, so I'm assuming this was someone's university year, maybe, due to the high number of signatures. It also features seven ghost signatures which were never completed and has stitch marks on one signature where it has clearly been picked back.
Most of the embroidery is signatures but there are a few with small messages. Thanks to a man called Howard, he dated his 'Love from Howard' message which shows the scarf was done in 1948.
A truly fabulous piece which could very easily be displayed as it's so gorgeous and unique.
