This piece was originally purchased from a private estate in Norfolk. I have loved owning it for over 10 years but it's now time to let someone else enjoy having it in their collection.
Made in the 1940's, this piece is made from a large version of the national flag of the Netherlands. A very lightweight cotton, the flag has been folded in two to make the skirt which makes the piece is double layered.
It has been quite crudely made with the flag simply folded in half and then a loose weave cotton strip stitched to the top and black ribbon tape run through it to allow you to gather the skirt to fit your waist. It has no turned hem, the finish is just the raw edge of the flag.
The piece was clearly made quickly with no fancy finishing details.
Measurements
Because it is gathered and drawn tight to the waist size you need, it will fit a variety of sizes. Un-gathered and laid flat the top of the flag is 30" so, as you want some fullness, it is best for up to a 44" waist but can cinch as small as 24". From top to bottom it measures 30 inches.
Condition
Good with some minor points to note;
- there are some black marks on the skirt in various places, please see photos. Most are small but are there to stay. I have treated the skirt with stain remover and the marks remain. Lots are pinhead sized but there are a couple of larger, 5p sized marks
- a few small holes - a 1" area of scattered small holes in the red, three 5mm holes in the white and a 10mm hole in the blue
