This exceptionally beautiful dress was made in the 1940's and is labelled Crompton Perry.
Made from gloriously heavy satin backed crepe in a rich shade of burgundy, it features a pleated bodice with thick shoulder pads (giving you the iconic shape of the era) a pleated skirt, long sleeves, which fasten at the wrist with a popper, and a tie back belt. It has an inset back zip.
It has the most beautiful bead and sequin detail at the waist and on the tops of the shoulders and is just the perfect dress for a dance.
Measurements
Works really well on a 40-32-42 but could be belted smaller at the waist. To ensure it will fit you properly, please compare the measurements below to a similar piece you already own.
Flat bust 21"
Flat waist 16.5"
Flat hip 22"
Shoulders between outer edges of shoulder pads 17"
Underarm sleeve length 17"
Shoulder to waist 18" - although you are meant to lift the waist to give a blouson bodice so best suited to a 16.5" shoulder to waist
Length 58.5"
Condition
Structurally it is in beautiful condition and looks like it has barely been worn. However, there are a couple of points to note;
- mild storage odour - this will air but the dress has been in storage for decades and has that "old" smell - it does NOT smell of moth balls
- there are marks all over the dress, especially bad in the back, but visible in every area. The marks are not that noticeable from a distance and the photos have been lightened to show the marks. Worn at a dance you'd be hard pushed to spot them.
Even with the marks, it is an incredible piece.
